5 Skill Areas to Consider in Your Claims Resume

A free reference to our clients!

Building a great resume for work as an insurance adjuster means understanding what hiring companies look for. If you want a competitive advantage, it isn't enough to merely list your last three employers and mention that old Cub Scout merit badge. For a moment, put aside the old resume and consider everything you have done, professionally or privately, within the context of the following 5 areas:

1. Construction/Engineering Experience

Adjusting firms and insurance companies look for individuals who have had experience with construction or engineering relative to the property inspected. Thus if you are applying for a position as an auto adjuster, consider carefully your experience with automobiles. Do you have a working knowledge of how a car is put together? Do you know the difference between a fender and a bumper? How do you know? Did you use to work on cars? Own a bodyshop? Help your grandpa with his Model T? Highlight this experience in your resume.

If you are looking to work claims as a residential claims adjuster - what experience do you have with home construction? How about remodeling or restoration? Ever put in a tile floor in the family kitchen? The more property-specific experience you can demonstrate in your resume the closer it will come to the top of the pile.

2. Insurance Policy Knowledge

Knowing how to read and interpret an insurance policy is particularly important for the independent insurance adjuster and hiring companies know it. Its not rocket science and you can gain a competitive edge over other applicants if you can point to a familiarity and facility with insurance policies. Even if it is as simple as having read and understood your own homeowner's insurance policy (more than most people do!) you shouldn't fail to mention your comfort level with insurance policy interpretation

3. Computer Skills

It cannot be overstated just how important good computer skills are to an insurance adjuster. For an independent adjuster, this perhaps more than anything else, will determine whether you "sink or swim". The days of handwriting claims are essentially over, and using an estimating program like Xactimate or Integriclaim requires at least an intermediate skill level. If you are proficient with a computer - do not fail to mention how you obtained that proficiency in your resume. If your computer skills are rusty - AdjusterPro highly recommends taking a basic computing course before seriously considering a career as an insurance adjuster.

4. People Skills

It is no surprise that good people skills are a desired trait in a good insurance claims handler. As an insurance adjuster, you will deal with a wide variety of people who will cross the spectrum of disposition and temperament. You don't have to be Dale Carnegie, but you should be able to maintain a polite, cordial, and professional attitude in dealing with each claimant. In your resume, highlight your people skills as much as possible - hiring adjusting firms or insurance companies will not fail to notice!

5. Time Management

An insurance adjuster, particularly an independent adjuster, is often not "on the clock" but working according to his or her own schedule. The ability to multi-task while working quickly and efficiently under pressure and time constraints is exceedingly important for an adjuster. Think about your own time management skills and where you have succeeded. Have you ever had a deadline? Has the boss ever needed a two-week project completed yesterday? Within reason and your own honest ability, project in your resume the most professional, capable, can-do image possible. This, as much as anything else, will leave a lasting and positive impression on your prospective employer.
