Become a South Carolina Insurance Adjuster
Licensing Rules and Online Exam Prep for South Carolina Claims Adjusters
AdjusterPro's Bottom-line: The state of South Carolina waives it's examination requirement for non-resident adjusters holding a license in a state that requires examination. All others, including residents of South Carolina, must take the state test.
Adjuster License Requirements
To become a licensed South Carolina insurance adjuster, individuals must:
- Be 18 years of age or more.
- South Carolina residents and applicants not licensed in a state requiring an exam must take the South Carolina exam.
- Non-resident applicants who are licensed in a state that requires an exam are exempt from taking the South Carolina exam.
- Emergency Adjusters: In the event of a catastrophe in which the normal supply of licensed South Carolina adjusters is not enough to handle the amount of claims filed, licensed insurers may appoint emergency adjusters with a 120 day temporary license.

South Carolina License Application
Resident applicants must submit:
- Application for Adjuster License, Form 3515
- License fee of $80
- The original Exam Report from Prometric showing applicant has passed the adjuster examination. This report will expire 24 months after it is issued. Call Prometric at 800-490-6548 or visit www.prometric.com/southcarolina to schedule your exam.
- An original SLED Criminal History Report, no more than three (3) months old ($25). Visit the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division here.
- If you were licensed as a Resident Adjuster in another state and your license status cannot be verified on the State Producer Licensing Database, you will need to submit a Letter of Clearance from that state. The letter must be less than 6 months old.
- A completed Application for Adjuster's License,
- License fee of $80, unless you are a Resident of a state whose fee is higher, in which case you will be charged the amount that your home state charges.
- For example, the North Carolina licensing fee is $125, so North Carolina residents must pay $125 for their South Carolina license.
- Certification from the Insurance Department of the applicant’s home state, showing that the applicant is licensed in that state as an adjuster and that an adjuster examination has been passed. If the applicant's home state does not require an adjuster examination, then a Certificate from another state where the applicant is licensed and has taken and passed an adjuster examination can be used.
- If the above cannot be provided, then the applicant will be required to pass South Carolina's adjuster examination.
Non-Resident applicants must submit:
Visit the "Adjuster" page of the South Carolina Department of Insurance's Licensing Section for more detailed information about the licensing process.
Reciprocity
South Carolina will grant reciprocal licensing privileges to an applicant who holds an adjuster license by exam in their home state. If an applicant’s home state does not require an exam, then the applicant can qualify with an adjuster license from another state, as long as they passed and exam for that license.
