Become a Rhode Island Insurance Adjuster

Licensing Rules and State Exam Study Guides for Rhode Island Claims Adjusters

AdjusterPro's Bottom-line: All Residents and Non-Residents must take the state exam, with the exception of active licensees from a few reciprocal states. In addition, a background check is required formost applicants. However, there is no continuing education requirement for this license, making it easy to maintain, and military veterans receive a discount.

Adjuster License Requirements

To become a licensed Rhode Island insurance adjuster, individuals must:

  • Be 18 years of age or more.
  • Criminal Background Check, unless already licensed in a reciprocal state.
  • New York residents must submit fingerprint cards.
  • Massachusetts residents must complete a CORI request form.
  • In the event of a catastrophe, Rhode Island will issue a temporary emergency Adjuster license, valid for 60 days. Applicants will only be granted this emergency license if they have adjusting experience and are represented by a licensed RI adjuster or insurer, acting as their employer.

Rhode Island identifies 6 elements of a complete application for the claims adjuster license:

  • Pay the two fees ($50 for application, $120 for license) separately.
  • Schedule and take the PearsonVue exam. Call PearsonVue at 1-800-274-3739 or visit their website at www.vue.com.
  • Reciprocity: If you can prove that you hold an active Adjuster License in a reciprocal state, then you may skip the RI exam and the Criminal Background report. Any of the following documents will be accepted:
    • Copy of your active Adjuster license from a reciprocal state;
    • Copy of a PDB (Producer Database Report) dated within 90 days;
    • A Certification letter from a reciprocal state dated within 90 days;
    • A license status inquiry page from a reciprocal state’s Insurance Department website.
  • Criminal Background report. This requirement applies to all RI Residents and Non-residents who do not hold a reciprocal license.
    • RI Residents: Criminal Background report from the Attorney General’s office (call 401-274-4400).
    • MA Residents: Complete and attach the CORI request form (located on the department’s website).
    • NY Residents: Complete the NY Fingerprint Card process. Email ldesilets@dbr.state.ri.us to request a fingerprint card kit by mail. Once process is complete, the state of NY will send the card to the R.I.
    • All other Non-residents: Obtain a criminal background report from your resident state or from one of the following approved vendors:
    • Choicepoint, www.choicetrust.com (individuals)
    • General Info Services, 800-369-3640 x4012 (individuals)
    • Corporate Screening, 800-229-8606 (employers/companies)
  • Veteran Information: Your licensing fee will be waived if you are an honorably discharged soldier, sailor, or marine who has at any time served the United States at a time of war. Provide a copy of the DD 214 form.
  • Submit your application. Residents and licensed Non-residents may apply online via NIPR’s e-licensing service. However, Non-residents who do not hold an active resident license in their resident state may not apply online, but rather must submit the Rhode Island Application for Claims Adjuster License.

Visit the RI Insurance Department to see a complete list of detailed instructions.
