Adjuster License Requirements
To become a licensed Montana insurance adjuster, individuals must:
- Be 18 years of age or older;
- Be a resident of Montana or of a state that allows Montana residents to act as adjusters in that state;
- Be trustworthy and of good character and reputation;
- Maintain an office accessible to the public in Montana with records of transactions made under the license;
- Pass the Montana exam (if a resident);
- Submit the proper application and fee;
- Non-residents must submit a letter of verification from their home state, or a state in which they are an adjuster, along with the application.

You may schedule your Montana exam online.
Montana License Application
- Complete the Montana Insurance Adjuster Application and submit it with a fee of $50.00.
- Submit proof of passing the exam, if applicable.
- Fingerprinting and a background check are required for residents. You will get your fingerprints taken at the exam site.
Reciprocity
Montana grants reciprocal licensing privileges to non-residents holding an adjuster's license in their home state.
Maintaining Your License
- Your Montana Independent Adjuster license will be good for two years.
- 24 hours of CE (one of which must be in insurance law) are required every 2 years for residents of Montana.
- Non-residents must fulfill their home state’s CE, unless that state does not require CE, in which case they must fulfill the Montana CE requirement.
- All licenses must be renewed once every two years, in the licensee's birth month. There is a $100 renewal fee.
- Report address changes with the Address Change Form.
