Become a Michigan Insurance Adjuster

Licensing Rules and Online State Exam Prep for Michigan Claims Adjusters

AdjusterPro's Bottom-line: If you hold a resident adjuster license by exam in another state you can apply for the Michigan license without having first to pass the Michigan exam.

Adjuster License Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age.

NOTE: Michigan has special licensing provisions for adjusters operating in an emergency/catastrophe situation. Read more.

Adjuster Exam Registration

You may schedule your Michigan exam online:

Michigan License Application

If you are required to pass the Michigan exam (for example, a Michigan resident, or a non-resident who does not already hold a license by examination in any other state), submit the following items at your exam site:

  • Completed Michigan Adjuster Application form FIS 0221.
  • Fee processing card FIS 0223 with $15.
  • Exam fee of $40.

If you do NOT need to take the Michigan exam, submit the following items to the Department of Insurance by mail:

  • Completed Michigan Adjuster Application form FIS 0221.
  • Fee processing card FIS 0223 with $15.
  • Mail items to: Prometric/OFIR, 1701 S. Waverly Rd. Suite 104, Lansing, MI 48917

Reciprocity

Michigan is reciprocal with every state that requires an exam to become an adjuster. If you have a license in another state, but did not take an exam in that state, you will still need to take the Michigan exam to obtain the Michigan license.

Maintaining Your License

      • No Continuing Education is required.
      • Yearly renewal fee of $5, which must be received and processed before March 31.
      • If your address change, you must notify the commissioner of insurance within 30 days by submitting the following:
        • Address Change Request (ACR) through NIPR.
          • A processing fee of $3.00 paid to NIPR.
          • Non-residents may also use form FIS 0262 Name or Address Change for Insurance Licensees.

License Fees

    • Initial Licensing and Application Fee: $15 payable to the State of Michigan
    • Exam fee for Resident Insurance Adjusters: $40
    • License Renewal Fee: $5.
