Ominous Possibilities if a Hurricane Hits the Gulf…

I remember when I first got into the CAT business, I had to do some internal wrestling with whether I could in good conscience hope for a catastrophe.  There’s plenty of joking around in the industry about whether a larger hurricane should be referred to as a “good” hurricane or a “bad” hurricane.  Once in the business, I was able to imagine the plight of the undertaker – when things are bad, business is good – but you’d better not talk about it too loud at parties.

I find not many are joking about what might happen in ’10 if a big one hits – there’s not much to laugh about.  I pray that we’re spared a gulf hit, because the consequences could be deadly enough to be a defining event in history.   Here’s an interesting article about one possible scenario – an uninhabitable gulf coast (click here).  I’m of the opinion that this article doesn’t even tell the half of it.  As I get out of the mainstream news, I’m finding reports that oil might be the least of our worries.  Some scientists are reporting that the rupture is spewing methane gas (click here), which is a big, big deal.  As I write this post, I’m in New Orleans.  Locals report that military and mercenary forces are present en masse in certain areas of their state.

Adjusters will need to prepare for toxic/hazardous scenarios.  Stay tuned – within days we’ll explain exactly what you’ll need to do to prepare to handle these claims.

Let’s hope and pray for the best,

- Adam
